Uyo Federal lawmaker: The Apostle Peter Amongst the twelve part 1

Michael Enyong (aka Babantan) is a household name in the political sphere of Akwa Ibom State, and even in Nigeria at large. While some people often refer to him as a ‘ lion’ who’ll always roar amidst enemies and contemporaries, another school of thoughts is of the believe that Babantan is synonymous to everything great.

Jesus Christ in the Bible had called 12 disciples to himself for the sole purpose of disseminating his gospel to the nucks and crannies of the universe. Among the twelve were fishermen, legal practitioners, tax collectors and so on. But among them, there was one who was more outstanding and dogged in the discharge of his duties. This was because of his believe and deeper love for the son of man. This disciple was ‘Peter’.

Just like Peter who had singled out himself from the 12 and other unknown disciples called by Jesus, Michael Enyong has distinguished himself among his colleagues who were elected and inaugurated as National Assembly Members from different constituencies. Enyong has been able to impact positively in lives and he has, as a matter of fact taken up the burden of his constituents on himself. This is what’s termed “love” and ” commitment”.

Some people would ask, ” who’s really this Babantan, and what are the things he has really done?

His real name is Rt. Hon. Engr. Micheal Enyong He is the Member representing Ibesikpo/Nsit Atai/ Uruan/ Uyo Federal Constituency, and also doubles as the Chairman, House Committee on Solid Minerals at the Federal House of Representatives, Abuja. He is not a Sunday-Sunday representative who’ll only show up during festivities and also on elections. He is someone who has been in the business of showing up for his people whenever he’s needed. Enyong is a jolly good fellow.

As Chairman of the aforementioned Committee at the National Assembly, Rt. Dr. Hon. Enyong has been able to secure jobs in certain Federal Agencies for more than 17 of his constituents between October to December last year. December last year, it was gathered that the Lawmaker has secured pensionable jobs for a total number of 83 people from his constituents. Maybe there are new names to this list, but I’m yet to know. It’s on record that no member of the National Assembly, past and present has ever made. This landmark achievement remains unbeatable.

To support and also consolidate the free, compulsory and qualitative education policy of His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, the governor of Akwa Ibom State. Hon. Enyong has initiated several students intervention programs to achieve this goal. Academic materials have been provided to his constituents both in Primary and Secondary Schools. Tertiary institution students across his Constituency have been selected and endowed with a scholarship which runs throughout their stay in school. This scholarship covers their tuition fees, textbooks and other school registrations as well as upkeep. These are done without any noise by this Lawmaker.

We’ve heard Hon. Enyong on different occasions maintaining he was sent to the National Assembly not only for the purpose of speaking at the National Assembly, but to also render selfless services thereby delivering dividends of democracy to his constituents at all times. To buttress this commitment, he has fixed young graduates of his constituency on a monthly payroll. This is to provide them with a source of livelihood pending when job opportunities would come knocking.

Selected youths across the four Local Government Areas of his Constituency have been sponsored on skill acquisition trainings. It is believed that in the next couple of months, these youths would be able to get established through the skills they’ve acquired during the training. This would in turn reduce the poverty rate of the community and definitely, would help curb crime activities in the Constituency. Hon Mike Enyong, what a silence achiever!

Babantan has done more than enough, and all of these will be highlighted in the next editions of this piece. Among the twelve, he has made himself the Apostle Peter of our time.
