Reconstitute federal character Commission now: Unyime Idem to Buhari
President Muhamadu Buhari has been urged to as a matter of urgent public importance reconstitute the Federal Character Commission.
This call was made by Hon. Unyime Idem while presenting a motion on the need for the Federal Government to appoint 37 federal commissioners for the Commission.
The Deputy Chairman, Communications Committee of the House said the essence of Federal Character Principle will be defeated if the Commission responsible for its implementation is understaffed and not properly constituted.
He wondered why the Commission that accommodates 37 commissioners has only the Acting Chairman as Member whose tenure expires in April this year.
He therefore urged President Buhari to urgently nominate 37 commissioners to turbocharge the Commission to be alive to its constitutional mandate of ensuring equitable distribution of resources, appointments and employment among the federating units to ensure unity, togetherness and sense of belonging.
In the said motion which was unanimously endorsed by his colleagues, Hon. Idem also prayed the House to mandate its Committee on Federal Character to ensure compliance.
Federal Character Commission is the Agency of government established by Act 34 of 1995 to implement and enforce the Federal Character Principle of fairness and equity in the distribution of public posts, socio-economic infrastructure among federating units that makes up the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
