I refer to last Saturday’s interview granted Inspiration 105.9 Fm by the 2015 governorship aspirant of the APC in Akwa Ibom State, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, wherein he (according to updates from some social media users) stated, inter alia, that “Governor Udom Emmanuel is not killing people”, which is very true, but that “those who killed people are now in APC”.
Since democracy began in 1999, many people have been killed as a result of political violence in Akwa Ibom. Most Akwaibomites have not forgotten that the heightened tension people like Udoedehe created during the 2011 electioneering when he contested for governorship under the platform of ACN exacerbated conflicts at the time. He is certainly trying to created new conflicts with what he is saying now.
All what Udoedehe said during that interview was pointing accusatory finger at his political opponents, a strategy commentators say the former minister uses to get sympathy votes. In saner climes, those who make such startling revelations on the air, or confessions, as the case may be, are usually arrested immediately after such an interview for further investigations to be carried out because, and by implication, he must have known something about the killers.
Security agencies and public commentators have regularly denounced political violence, and repeated their resolve that those responsible for the crimes will be brought to justice. Therefore those in positions of authority should act decisively and ask Udoedehe to name names. We want the killers Udoedehe talked about to be arrested brought to book.
Udoedehe was quoted to have said further: “Nsima Ekere (MD/CEO of NDDC) is the enemy of Akwa Ibom. Akwa Ibom people, these are your enemies; People who opposed me yesterday, today they want to be Governor. How can I give my support to Nsima?
Citizens should be cautious and not to allow themselves to be used for political thuggery this time around. Both Ekere and Udoedehe are top leaders of the APC in Akwa Ibom, and both of them want to be governor next year. Therefore, if killers are in the APC, as the one who brought the opposition party to Akwa Ibom has said, then we don’t want such a party here. The security people should arrest Udoedehe and trace the killers he talked about. Failure to do so, let heads roll
