Akwa Ibom House of Assembly Aspirant Escapes Assassination

What could have resulted in loss of lives was averted on Tuesday as Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly hopeful, Hon. Utitofon Itoro Okon, hordes of her supporters and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were attacked by armed hoodlums at Mbiaya community in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The delegation was ambushed by thugs at around 5:00pm while returning from a consultative visit to Northern Uruan Ward 1.
It took the gallantry of drivers of the four vehicles in the aspirant’s convoy to speedily wade through the siege.
The attackers fired a gunshot which shattered the windscreen of one of the buses conveying members of the aspirant’s campaign committee.
Another car on the convoy was pelted with stones and bottles by the assailants who chanted, “na PDP control this area.”
Some of the hoodlums were chanting “Udom and Tony Akan 2019.”
Governor Udom Emmanuel’s aide, Mr. Tony Akan, hails from the community. He is seeking election into the House of Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking on behalf of the aspirant, Hon. Utitofon Itoro Okon who is running on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), director general of the campaign organization, Elder Effiong Thompson, described the incident as an act of political intolerance, and called on security agencies to wade in to forestall worse consequences as the buildup to the 2019 elections intensifies.
He called on political parties, aspirants and supporters to resist indulging in acts of politically-induced violence.
Efforts to get the reaction of Mr. Tony Akan proved abortive as he neither picked phone calls nor replied text messages.
