• 2019: JUSTIFYING THE 2ND TERM MANDATE
Many people who know my journey in politics with Rt. Hon. Elder Aniekan Uko, Member representing Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency, in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and Chairman House Committee on Rules, Businesses, Ethics and Privileges will be taken aback by my screamer and position that, he should go for a second term.
For those who don’t know, I contested keenly the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Primaries with Elder Uko in 2014. As fate will have it, he emerged victorious. As a loyal party man, I put all our differences and contentions behind and rallied support for his candidacy.
He went on to win and by God’s special grace entered the record books. He was elected Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, despite being a first timer in the House. He thus became the first man from Ibesikpo Asutan to reach that exalted position.
This feat was however truncated by the unfortunate ruling by the Appeal court, which nullified his election and ordered a rerun. By implication, he also lost his prime position in the House and went back to resume the struggle.
Again, he won the rerun and staged a comeback to the floor of the House.
Amazingly, his misfortunes by no means deterred his performance. He has achieved, and of dare say, beyond the imagination and expectations of the entire good people of Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.
In the history of Ibesikpo Asutan politics, we have never had it so good. He has kept the beat of Constituency briefing regular and rewarding. Rt. Hon. Aniekan Uko did what no lawmaker or politician in Ibesikpo Asutan, save former Council Chairman, Bishop Ekpe James ever did, but on an unpredictable scale.
At the peak of recession, he doled out eight Toyota corolla saloon cars, two SUV Lexus 330 jeeps,1 LE Toyota Camry and 20 brand new motorcycles to constituents, who worked hard for the party and his campaign Organization. Others never did this, or come back to say such noteworthy Thank You, to the people who worked for them.
Rt. Hon Uko, I must add, have dolled out other items, including, hairdryers, generators and hair dressing kits to start hair dressing business, to 10 women across the ten wards thus empowering them in their business. Another 10 fashion designers were encouraged with shops with complete sewing facilities to commence their business.
Rt. Hon. Aniekan Uko has also supported indigent students with scholarships across all the wards of the Local Government and a scheme to train many others in different skills acquisition, all expenses paid.
In a recent commentary that catalogued the achievements of the amiable Lawmaker, his other activities were stated as follows :
”…The physically challenged people in his local government have also benefited from his representation, because he has from time to time gone around, to meet them, presenting life enhancement gifts, provided wheelchairs and helped make life easier for them. That is why its not a surprise, the people are clamouring for him to return to the House of Assembly in 2019.
The commendations added that ;
“Electricity is very vital in developmental progress, and very essential in local communities, that is why he took upon himself to provide electricity to five communities of Ibesikpo Asutan, by providing five electricity transformers, to Mbikpong Ikot Edim, Ikot Obio Offong, Afaha Ikot Obio Nkan and Owut Uta Ibesikpo.
For the first time in the history of representation, the people of Ibesikpo Asutan have felt that they have a representative at the State House of Assembly, not just that type of representative that is only visible on newspapers, radio or TV stations, but the one that is visible on ground for people to see and have access to.
Aniekan Uko is a man of his word, that has his own mind, who is always on the side of the people for the sake of posterity.
His contributions and arguments during House plenary on issues as it concerns the state rates him THE BEST/OUTSTANDING LAWMAKER OF THE YEAR 2016 by Nigerian Union Of Journalists (NUJ) Akwa Ibom State Council, an award no other lawmaker has bagged till date.
He’s eloquent, intelligent and oratory in Public speaking.
Let me quote one his speeches on the floor of the House when he was the only voice to speak against the #RealPropertyChargeBill
“My aspiration to represent my people in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly was driven by conscience and by the Grace of God Almighty I’ve been able to allow that conscience to guide me in the bills and Motions I have sponsored in the floor of this house and also in my general contributions in whatever is brought before us in this hallow chamber and in committees I serve.
I thank God for the bill not being an Executive Bill because no matter how lean the state resources are, I will not support any form of revenue generation that will be detrimental to Akwa Ibom People who took pains and stood under the sun to elect us to where we have found ourselves.
At this point of recession, I would be of the opinion that we consider critically the kind of bills we pass into law….Yes.
I will not support any law that will compel Property Owners in Akwa Ibom State to be taxed for now.
We should be thinking of making laws that will forcefully relocate the Mobil Headquarters to Akwa Ibom so that our people can be gainfully employed.
We should be thinking of laws that can compel Akwa Ibom Citizens to consider the renewal of their vehicle licences when due as mandatory civic responsibility and to register their vehicles in Akwa Ibom not Lagos and Abuja.
Just last week, Mr.Speaker, I witnessed a situation where a group of revenue agents from my local government went to collect money from poor cyclist operators in Ikot Akpan Abia in the name of generating revenue for the council, and the hungry/angry bike men came out with matchets and weapons and started descending on the tax collectors and they ran leaving the car they used which was later destroyed and set ablaze.
Nigeria is in Recession and there’s Hunger in the land, families are crying because they cannot provide one square meal. People are suffering and these people are angry because they voted for Prosperity and change which today their experience has attracted the opposite.
Of recent, just last week the Governor of Cross River state placed ban on all sort revenue generation by way of taxing the poor indigenes of the state and by my assessment that was a positive step which is worth emulating.
I was given this mandate on trust, therefore I will not sacrifice it for anything not even the grudges from any quarters.
I may be the only voice to speak against this bill but I will be so satisfied if I am properly judge by the open wound we all have which is Our Conscience.
Let’s think of how to put food on the table of Akwa Ibom People at this time not forcing our people to live in penury and untold hardship”
(Aniekan Uko’s position during debate on REAL PROPERTY CHARGE BILL <14th Feb., 2017>)
He refused to sacrifice his conscience and stood by the people while others chorused “I concur”
Every lawmaker should be fearless as Aniekan Uko.
His love for education did not stop at his scholarship scheme and payment of school fees for the people of his constituency and beyond, but expanded further to his building and renovation of schools to make learning interesting. He built a Primary school at Akpa Utong, Renovated a four classroom Primary school block at Mbierebe Obio and others, just to accommodate both the younger people who desires for knowledge and educational attainments.
The piece further adds that :
“… His projects also includes his vision to make Ibesikpo Asutan a satellite town, which he has succeeded in doing, by building an Ultra- modern City Centre at Mbikpong Ikot Edim, Ultra- modern healthcare centre at Nung Udoe Ibesikpo, provided portable water project ( solar) at Ndikpo Atang and many more.
Here is my submission. In Ibesikpo Asutan, the old saying that, ‘People only walk through in politics’, will not apply to Rt. Hon. Aniekan Uko.
It is wrong that Ibesikpo Asutan do not have, and cannot boast of one politician with serious clout since the advent of democracy, who has waxed strong in the system graduating through the ranks, besides perhaps former Governor Victor Attah.
We do not have Senator Effiong Bob, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senator Ita Enang, Senator Aloysius Etok or Senator Udo Udoma.
Where is our Senator Nelson Effiong or Rt. Hon. Nse Ntuen, Chief Nduese Essien Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke, Isanntim Kenneth Okon, Rt. Hon. Okpolupm Eteh, Comr. Udo Kerian, OBA, or Rt. Hon. Eseme Eyiboh. Men who have consolidated in political profile and can become voices for their people?
Ibesikpo Asutan people, its time to rise above clannish politics and invest your support to build up this one who has shown hope and signs of vision and selfless service to the people.
As scripture says, “he who is faithful with little will be faithful with much”.
If he did what he has accomplished thus far and counting in his first term, what will a second term in office come 2019 hold in store for Ibesikpo Asutan and the State at large.
What is more enticing and compelling is that he may just return and resume his unfairly aborted role as Speaker of the next Assembly.
Let us make this happen. Support Rt. Hon. Elder Aniekan Uko, OUR “IBOROAKAM”, a God fearing husband of one wife and loving father of two beautiful kids.
ANIEKAN UKO, EVERYWHERE YOU GO!!!
EVERYWHERE YOU GO, IBOROAKAM 2019!
